The people behind BoonFence

A better boundary starts with people.

BoonFence was founded around a simple idea: use technology to help people and wild baboons share the Cape Peninsula without turning wild animals into urban animals.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND BOONFENCE

Two people who believe
there is a better way.

BoonFence co-founders Adriaan Oosthuizen and Dirk Pieters
CO-FOUNDER

Adriaan Oosthuizen

Adriaan has spent many years studying and working in nature conservation, developing a deep understanding of wildlife and an enormous love for baboons. He is increasingly concerned that the escalating conflict between baboons and urban communities could ultimately lead to the culling of entire troops.

Adriaan believes there is another way. With the right combination of technology, practical conservation and a little determination, he believes we can find better ways for people and baboons to coexist — keeping baboons wild while reducing the problems they cause in urban areas.

CO-FOUNDER

Dirk Pieters

Dirk is a retired photographer who shares Adriaan's deep affection for baboons and the natural environment. His career in photography gave him a lifelong appreciation for observing and understanding the natural world, and he is now applying his experience in marketing and communication to nature-conservation projects.

Together with Adriaan, Dirk is working to turn the BoonFence idea into a practical solution that can help protect both Cape Peninsula communities and the baboons that live alongside them.

The founders

Building the idea together.

BoonFence brings together a practical interest in the Cape Peninsula, technology and the challenge of human–wildlife conflict.

The project is at development stage. We are looking for people and organisations who can help test the idea properly, bring specialist expertise to the table and explore where the technology could make a useful difference.
