Existing wildlife-tracking and virtual-fencing technology provides the starting point. BoonFence is about adapting and integrating it for baboon management.
The proposed collar would be based on established wildlife-management collar principles: secure, weather-resistant, appropriately sized and designed to minimise irritation and interference with normal behaviour.
Provide reliable position information for selected troop members.
Support a digital boundary that can be configured and changed by authorised operators.
A small integrated solar panel could reduce the need for recapture simply to replace or recharge batteries.
Initial collar fitting would be undertaken by appropriately qualified professionals under veterinary supervision and in accordance with applicable wildlife, veterinary and environmental requirements.
The final collar and fitment programme would be developed with wildlife veterinarians, conservation specialists and the relevant authorities.
